1.    Too many 000 clothes

My daughter was due in June (winter here in Brisbane!) but did I think about the temperature in June & July when I was buying cute baby clothes? Clearly not!

I had an excess of adorable baby dresses and rompers, all appropriate for the wrong season. (face palm!)

Also, they grow so fast. Take this from me - don’t get lured into buying all the cutest baby clothes in tiny sizes. Buy some 00, 0 and size 1 because those sizes will last a little longer.

2.    A rocking chair for the nursery

I’m going to admit I though I was going to be one of those mums who would get up in the middle of the night, put on slippers, make a cup of tea and then breastfed by the light of a small lamp in the baby’s room and enjoy the peaceful quiet of the night. Ha!

It was more like open one eye, lift the baby out, lean on some pillows and feed in bed.  I even had a little caddy with everything I needed beside the bed so I didn’t have to leave the comfort of my warm doona.

3.    Baby towels

I mostly just used a normal sized towel! I really didn’t need to go out and by special ‘baby towels’

4.    Teeny tiny shoes

So cute but so impractical! They don’t really keep them on and you end up losing them.

5.    Breastfeeding Pillow

I used this maybe three times?! I would often just use the cough pillows to help with positioning at the beginning. From my experience it wasn’t all that helpful and it was very bulky to store away.

6.    A 'Proper' Nappy Bag

I ended up using my oversized handbag instead, it was much for practical for me. You don’t really need to spend big bucks on a special nappy bag, the only difference is that it comes with a mini change mat (which you could just buy separately) and a couple of extra storage pockets. One thing I did find really helpful is to buy those mesh document wallets (see below), label them all e.g. nappies, change of clothes, wipes and have them inside the nappy bag. Once you remember which colour has what in it, it makes it so quick and easy to grab things, rather than digging around inside the bag.

7.    Wrap carrier

You know those mega long fabric ones? I tried multiple times but just couldn’t get it right. I ended up using a gifted Baby Bjorn carrier (which was structured and you just attach two clips). Maybe not as ‘trendy’ as the fabric ones but it worked for me so much better! Also, we found a way to unclip and transition it to my husband while keeping baby asleep ;-)

So there we have it, 7 'essential' baby items that weren't really necessary! Thanks for reading and hope you got something out of it!

All the best for special time in your life. You've got this :-)

With all my love and a flash of a camera,

Tash xx
